Russian, Japanese Military Officials Discuss Military Cooperation

Russian Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev and Deputy Director of the Japanese Defense Agency Ken Sato met here Tuesday on a bilateral military cooperation plan for 2001.

The Japanese official "has brought to Moscow new proposals aimed at broadening the format of military cooperation between the two states," said Col. Gen. Leonid Ivashov, head of the International Cooperation Department of the Russian Defense Ministry.

He said Russia and Japan would carry out a joint naval exercise on rescue operation at sea later this year.

According to the general, the Japanese side reiterated the intention of the director-general of the Japanese Defense Agency to pay an official visit to Russia this year.

As reply, Russia's naval, air force and ground troop commanders may visit Tokyo in 2001, Ivashov said.
