Senior Official Urges Further Advancement of Social Sciences

Li Tieying, president of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), said Tuesday that social scientists should study and resolve significant social problems raised in modern times.

Social scientists nationwide should emancipate their mind and focus on big issues facing the Chinese people when the nation is forging ahead with the reform, open-up and modernization drive, said Li, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.

At the annual work conference of the CASS, which started Tuesday in Beijing, Li suggested researchers in the CASS should make more academic achievements in social sciences which are useful for the state and the people.

As the nation's top think tank, the CASS should make its own contribution to the study of Marxism in modern times, Li said.

Meanwhile, social scientists must shoulder the responsibility of promoting the future development of socialist ethics and the legal system in the new century, Li said.

In addition, Li said it is necessary to reform the CASS itself, with emphasis placed on encouraging researchers to exert their utmost and make more excellent academic achievements in their various fields.

The CASS should also develop its graduate school into one of the most prestigious in the country.

During the two-day work conference, more than 300 delegates from CASS institutes are scheduled to discuss the development outline of the academy in the coming five years, including structural reform.
