Sri Lanka's Hard-core Tamil Tiger Rebel Arrested

Sri Lankan police said Tuesday that they have arrested a hard-core Tamil Tiger rebel leader who is suspected of being involved in the assassination of Major General Lucky Algama at an election meeting in Ja Ela, about 15 kilometers north of the capital, in December 1999.

Police discovered hand bombs from the possession of the Tiger rebel leader identified as Philip during the arrest on Monday. He had allegedly accepted a contract to kill a Colombo businessman given to him by an underworld gang he had joined recently, police said.

Investigations have revealed that Philip was also at one time in charge of the Tamil rebels armory and he had been present with the suicide bomber at the assassination of General Algama.

Philip was the name used by him as a Tamil Tiger rebel while his another name is Esan alias Ravindran, police said.

Police also suspect that he had been involved in several other crimes as well in Colombo.
