Beijing Agriculture Reports 9 Billion Yuan in Added ValueBeijing recorded about 9 billion yuan (over US$1 billion) in agricultural added value in 2000, an increase of 4 percent over the previous year, latest statistics show.The gross domestic product (GDP) in Beijing's rural area was 53.6 billion yuan (US$6.5 billion) in 2000, up 10.1 percent over 1999. The added value of Beijing's industry and service sector hit 21.6 billion yuan (US$2.6 billion) and 23 billion yuan (US$2.8 billion), respectively in 2000, up 11.2 percent and 12.1 percent over 1999. Readjustment in rural economic setup last year helped optimize the industrial structure and upgrade the overall agricultural level, according to Yue Fuhong, vice mayor of Beijing recently. Local farmers also benefit from the structural readjustment in agriculture. The per capita income of in rural areas last year stood at 4,687 yuan (US$565), an increase of 7.3 percent over 1999, the fastest growth rate recorded in the 9th Five Year Plan (1996-2000) period. |
