North China Faces Serious Water ShortageA reservoir in north China 's Hebei Province, once a resort for its beautiful scenery, has put up a slogan at the bank, saying: " Treat water saving as a revolution."Water shortage is now affecting the daily life of the local residents, as drought in the past two years has almost dried up the water conservancy project. Wei Zhimin, an expert in water resources, said that not only Hebei province, but also the whole northern part of the country is faced with serious water shortages. North China has long been a populous area and an industrial and agricultural base in the country. As industral and agricultural production develops and population increases, the per capita water resource in the region is even lower than that in drought-dominating Israel and some African countries. Zheng Liansheng, an official in charge of water resources in Hebei, said North China suffers from drought in nine of 10 years. To lessen the water shortage, the Chinese government is planning to channel water from the Yangtze River in the south to North China.
