ICBC's E-Banking Completes Deals Worth Two Trillion Yuan

The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) announced Tuesday that in 2000 its electronic banking business completed 397 million deals, with a trading volume of over 1.93 trillion yuan, accounting for 3.1 percent of its traditional businesses.

A spokesman for the ICBC said that, as the country's largest commercial bank, the ICBC accelerated the building of e-banking last year, with progress being made on on-line banking, telephone banking, corporate banking, mobile phone banking and various other e-banking facilities.

He said that by the end of the year, the bank has opened telephone banking in 261 cities, covering 80 percent of its branches and ranking the first among banks in China. Meanwhile, its on-line banking has been extended to 172 large and medium-sized cities in comparatively developed areas, accounting for 53 percent of its city branches.

The ICBC's mobile phone banking was opened in May last year, and has been added to 21 municipalities and provincial capital cities, issuing over 5,800 cards, also leading the way among Chinese banks.
