Vice Premier Expects Prosperity in China

China witnessed remarkable changes in the previous century and expects a more prosperous, democratic and civilized society in the new century, Vice Premier Wu Bangguo said Monday.

During the Spring Festival reception jointly held by the United Front Work Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the General Office of the State Council, Wu pointed out that the majority of State-owned Enterprises have gotten out of the red and China has drawn out the plan for the Tenth Five-Year Plan period (2001-2005).

He also spoke highly of the work done in 2000 by the counselors of the State Council and members of the Central Institute of Culture and History (CICH).

He noted that history has demonstrated the indispensable role of the State Council counselors in the work of government, adding that this role helps the government make scientific and democratic decisions, and is an important element of the CPC's alliance with non-communist party members.

Wu also urged the CICH members to make new contributions to the reunification of the motherland.
