China's Top Legislator Arrives in Bangalore

China's top legislator Li Peng flew in Bangalore, the southern business hub of India from New Delhi Monday afternoon to continue his week-long official goodwill visit in India.

Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, was greeted at the airport by local officials of Karnataka Pradesh and Bangalore, a city which is called the "silicon valley" of India.

Li is expected to visit some local high-tech companies here.

During his stay in New Delhi, Li met with Indian president, prime minister and parliamentary leaders, and exchanged views with them on bilateral relations and other issues of common interests.

Arriving aboard the same plane included Li's wife Zhu Lin and Vice-Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee Buhe.

It is Li's second visit to India following his first one in 1991 as the premier. It is another exchange of high-level visits between China and India following President Jiang Zemin's state visit to India in 1996 and Indian President Kocheril Raman Narayanan's visit to China in May 2000.

Li's ongoing visit is to enhance trust, boost friendship and strengthen cooperation, and to continue the healthy and sound development of Sino-Indian relations.

Bangalore is the fourth leg of Li's week-long Indian tour, as he is scheduled to leave for Beijing on January 17. On his way home, Li is scheduled to make a stop-over in Hyderabad, also a booming city in southern India.

Li started his India tour by flying into Mumbai on January 9, as guest of Chairman Krishan Kant of India's Upper House of the Parliament and Speaker G.M.C. Balayogi of the House of the People.
