Overseas Publicity Meeting Held in Beijing

A high-ranking press official called for more efforts on Monday, January 15, to create a better environment that allows the rest of the world to better understand China -- and vice versa.

Publicity for overseas service of what's going on in China has greatly improved since the country introduced the policy of reform and opening up, and laid a sound foundation for further development, Zhao Qizheng, director of the Information Office of the State Council, told a national meeting in this regard held from January 13 to 15.

Yet more should be done to open new channels of publicity for overseas services in accordance with China's modernization and the dramatic changes worldwide, the official said.

He stressed that more creative work should be done to promote publicity for overseas service at a time when China has started to implement its 10th Five-Year Plan to accelerate socialist economic development at the beginning of the new century.

During the meeting, participants studied Jiang Zemin's speech on publicity work for overseas service.

Officials in charge of publicity work for overseas and spokesmen from the central and local governments at the various levels attended the meeting.
