Japan Donates to NW China School

Japan's Grassroots Project will donate US$89,047 to a secondary school in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, northwest China, according to an agreement signed between the two sides Monday.

The donation will be used to build more classrooms for Zhangyi Secondary School in Guyuan, one of the poorest counties in Ningxia, where insufficient facilities lead to almost 50 percent of the students leaving school after finishing primary school.

Liu Zhong, vice chairman of People's Government of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Takeda Yukiko, president of the Kansai Japan-China Exchange Council and Nobuyuki Sugimoto, minister of the Japanese embassy to China were present at Monday's signing ceremony.

Initiated by the Japanese government, the Grassroots Project provides aid to developing countries in an effort to improve their medical and educational facilities. It has so far launched some 300 projects in China during the past decade.
