Russia, Iran Agree to Expand Cooperation in Energy Sector

Iran and Russia should make further efforts to upgrade cooperation in oil and economic sectors, Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said on Sunday.

Zanganeh made the remarks at a meeting with visiting Russian deputy foreign minister Viktor Kalyuzhny, during which the two officials discussed expansion of cooperation between Iran and Russia, Iran's IRNA news agency reported.

Kalyuzhny, who is also Russian president's special envoy on Caspian Sea affairs, pointed to the strategic ties between the two countries and called for more extensive cooperation in oil, gas and petrochemicals sectors, said IRNA.

In another development, Kalyuzhny and his Iranian counterpart Ali Ahani agreed on Sunday to hold a working meeting on the status of the Caspian Sea at the level of deputy foreign ministers in February.

At the meeting, the two officials also discussed protection of ecology and fishing in the energy-rich waters.

Kalyuzhny explained Russia's stand on setting up a Caspian Center, a secretariat of a framework convention on protecting Caspian Sea environment.
