Chinese Government Expresses Sympathy for Central American Quake Victims

The Chinese Government expresses deep concern and sympathy over the severe loss of life and property caused by a strong earthquake that hit El Salvador early Sunday morning (Beijing time), the Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Zhu Bangzao said Sunday night.

Zhu said in a statement that the Chinese Government believes that the people of El Salvador can, under the leadership of its government and with help from the international community, overcome the current crisis and rebuild their homes at an early date.

The death toll from the major earthquake jolting Central America, measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale, has risen to at least 138 people, according to earlier reports Sunday. Most of the victims were from El Salvador.
