Mexico Demands Extradition of Former Minister by Nicaragua

Mexico has filed a formal extradition petition to Nicaragua against its former Tourism Minister, Oscar Espinosa Villareal, local press reported Saturday.

Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Francisco Aguirre Sacasa confirmed that the Nicaraguan government received the petition Friday presented by Mexican ambassador Ricardo Galan, the reports said.

"We are going to study the petition and to assure the documentation abides by the extradition treaties signed between Nicaragua and Mexico," Aguirre Sacasa was quoted as saying.

Espinosa, also former mayor of Mexico City, has been accused of embezzling 45 million U.S. dollars when he was the mayor.

The Nicaraguan foreign ministry will deliver the petition to the Supreme Court, Aguirre Sacasa said.

Espinosa arrived in Nicaragua two months ago and requested political asylum.

He was arrested by Nicaraguan National Police on orders of the judge of the Third Criminal District of Managua, and is now imprisoned in a jail of the Criminal Investigations Direction in Managua.
