Chi, also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and a state councilor, said that China and the Philippines have enjoyed a long-term traditional friendship.

In the new century, the two states and armed forces should further promote mutual understanding and trust and strengthen cooperation so as to safeguard the peace and stability of the South China Sea, he added.

Chi also briefed the guests on the Chinese government's views on the international and regional issues, China's domestic situation and army development.

Mercado said that Philippines is ready to promote good-neighborly relations with China and deepen the friendship between the two armed forces and peoples.
