Customhouses in Guangdong Report Tariff GrowthThe customhouses across south China's Guangdong Province levied 65.81 billion yuan (about US$7.93 billion) in tariffs last year, up 35.3 percent from 1999.Local customs statistics said the volume accounts for 29.4 percent of the country's total tariffs paid to the state coffers, or 18 billion yuan (US$2.17 billion) more than the province's pre-set tariff quota for the year of 2000. Industry experts analyze the fact that China has been practicing a pro-active fiscal policy by trying to spur domestic demand and adjust industrial structure, promoting foreign trade in different localities like Guangdong. Imports have continued to rise as a result of robust production demand in different enterprises of the province, especially high-tech businesses, which have laid a good foundation for the levy of the tariffs. In the meantime, different customhouses of the province have kept a firm hand on controlling smuggling and step up various kinds of law enforcement activities. |
