Chinese Top Legislator on Multi-polarization, Globalization
Chinese top legislator Li Peng on Saturday called on the people of the world to promote the process of multi-polarity for world peace and ride the tide of globalization for common development in order to establish a just and fair new international political and economic order.
In an address delivered at the Indian International Center in New Delhi, the chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress noted that the gradual multi- polarization in the international political pattern and the increasing globalization of the world economy are the two prominent trends of the present-day world.
"The major task facing the people of the world is to promote the process of multi-polarity for world peace and ride the tide of globalization for common development so that a just and fair international new political and economic order can be established in the new century," he said.
Multi-polarity represents an inevitable trend of the current international relations, and serves world peace, stability and democracy, said Li, who arrived in India Tuesday for a week-long official visit.
"We maintains that all countries, regardless of size, wealth and strength, are equal members of the international community and entitled to equal status, rights and interests," Li stressed.
The world affairs should "be addressed through consultations among all countries" instead of "being dictated by a country or a few countries," and the global challenges need to be met by countries working together, he added.
Li went on to say that economic globalization, which has become "an unavoidable reality" in the world economy today, "may facilitate each country's efforts of broadening sources of investment, introducing advanced technology and drawing upon managerial expertise."
Developing countries can also seize the opportunities brought by globalization, tap the potential of a late-starter and accelerate economic development.
Li also pointed out the negative impact of globalization.
"The gap between rich and poor is widening in a global context. Contradictions between the North and the South are put into sharp relief," he said.
"Developed countries are at an advantage in the process of globalization, while developing countries are faced with grave challenges in safeguarding their economic sovereignty and security. Globalization should benefit the whole world," Li added.
The international community should work hard to make sure that globalization leads to balanced, stable and sustainable development of world economy, he said.
Li also stressed the importance of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, which were jointly initiated by late Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai and late Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1954.
"After being put to practice for a few decades, the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence not only have been widely accepted as basic principles governing international relations, but will also serve as an important foundation for a new international political and economic order," Li said.
