Putin, Chirac Discuss Nagorno-Karabakh Problem by Phone

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Jacques Chirac on Friday discussed by phone bilateral cooperation in settling regional conflicts, especially the Nagorno-Karabakh problem between Azerbaijan and Armenia, said the Kremlin press service.

The two presidents talked about the ways and prospects of settling the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. They stressed Russia and France should strengthen cooperation in mediating this problem as well as other regional conflicts in the world.

Putin and Chirac also discussed preparations for the latter's visit to Russia this year. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the results of Russian-French cooperation in 2000, said the press service.

Wishing Putin a happy "Old New Year" celebrated in Russia, Chirac expressed confidence that the Russian leadership will successfully continue the economic reforms.
