Xinjiang Records Rapid Economic Growth

Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which accounts for one-sixth of China's territory, recorded an eight-percent annual increase in its gross domestic product over the past five years.

By the end of 2000, the region's GDP totaled 136.5 billion yuan, up 46 percent over the 1995 figure, said Aabdul'ahat Abdurixit, chairman of the regional government.

The per capita GDP of Xinjiang has climbed from 4,760 to 7,433 yuan over the past five years. The financial revenue came to 13.5 billion yuan, doubling that of 1995. More than 1,170 achievements in science and technology have been gained in the past five years.

The chairman attributed the fast economic growth to the structural reform and large scale infrastructure construction of recent years.

Operation of the southern Xinjiang railway and the highway between Urumqi and Kuytun has alleviated dense traffic in the region, he said.
