Chinese Senior Translators Awarded

A ceremony was held Friday, January 12, by the Translators Association of China (TAC) to award 50 outstanding Chinese translators.

Vice Premier Qian Qichen and Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Xu Jialu issued certificates of honor to the recipients.

The crowned translators were recommended by 15 departments for foreign affairs including Chinese Foreign Ministry, International Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the Ministry of Culture. They have been engaged in translation for more than 30 years.

Many of the recipients worked as interpreters for Chinese leaders in the 1950s and 1960s, and translated piles of important diplomatic documents and political essays. Veteran diplomats Pu Shouchang, Yan Mingfu and Ji Chaozhu are among those awarded.

According to TAC, the gathering was held to encourage youth to inherit the diligence of the translators of the old generation in order to improve the translation work in China.

Israel Epstein, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and over 100 representatives participated in the ceremony.
