Trade Surplus of Macao SAR Soars by NovemberThe Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China scored a trade surplus of 1.94 billion patacas (US$242.5 million) in the first 11 months of 2000, the latest official statistics show.The trade surplus soared 71.4 percent over the same period of the previous year, according to the figures released by the Statistics and Census Services of the Macao SAR government. In the 11 months, Macao's export and import volumes were 18.38 billion patacas (US$2.3 billion) and 16.44 billion patacas (US$2.055 billion), which rose 14.7 percent and 10.4 percent respectively over the respective figures a year ago. Textiles and garments remained the leading export items, accounting for 82.5 percent of all exports. Exports to the United States and the European Union took up 47.9 percent and 28.5 percent, respectively, of the total export volumes. Those to China's inland areas and the Hong Kong SAR represented 17.1 percent. Most imports came from the Asian-Pacific region. China's inland areas and Hong Kong supplied 56.5 percent of the total while goods from the United States and the European Union accounted for 13.8 percent. |
