UPS Wins Final Award of China Air RightsUPS, the US package delivery company, applauded Thursday the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for the speed with which it finalized the award of direct flights to China. The DOT announced late Wednesday that it had finalized an order granting UPS the right to fly directly to and from China six days a week. The tentative decision had been issued on November 21, 2000. "I want to applaud Secretary Slater and the DOT staff for moving expeditiously on this matter," said Jim Kelly, chairman and CEO of UPS. The Atlanta, Georgia, company said it now will turn its attention to completing operating plans and receiving operational authority from the Chinese government that would permit service to begin on April 1. UPS said it viewed China as a critical growth market and would use the new air rights to aggressively grow its business to and from China. The company now is serving more than 200 countries and territories around the world. |
