Virulent Pesticides Destroyed in HainanThis southern Chinese island province of Hainan destroyed 14.2 tons of virulent pesticides in Chengmai and Lingshui counties recently. The pesticides were just part of the 45.7-ton virulent pesticides amassed from across the island province. These virulent pesticides are banned from use and were sealed up for safekeeping. The remaining 31.5 tons of the pesticides were returned to the producers, said local sources. The move is a major action of Hainan in its efforts to build itself into an ecological province and grow more pollution-free fruits and vegetables, said a local official. Hainan is one of China's most important production bases for fruits and vegetables in winter, as well as tropical fruits. Last year, it produced 3.05 million tons of fruits and vegetables in winter, of which, 1.402 million tons and 670,000 tons were shipped out of the island, respectively. Last September, the provincial agricultural bureau, the provincial administration for industry and commerce and the provincial bureau for technical supervision jointly issued an emergent circular to ban the use of 16 kinds of virulent pesticides in growing vegetables and fruits and recommending 17 kinds of low-toxicity pesticides. While fully retrieving 87 licenses in trading in virulent pesticides, relevant departments of the province have also sent down three working groups to check and implement the circular, the official added. |
