Lucent, China Telecom Sign US$15m Contract

US telecommunications equipment maker Lucent Technologies said Thursday, January 11, it had signed a US$15 million contract with Liaoning Telecom, a subsidiary of China's largest fixed-line carrier China Telecommunications.

Under the contract, Lucent would deliver its trademarked optical networking product WaveStar OLS 400G, an 80-channel dense wave division multiplexingDWDMsystem with a maximum capacity of 400 gigabits per second, it said in a statement.

The system's speed and capacity enabled it to transmit the equivalent of five million simultaneous phone calls or 80 million one-page emails per second, it added.

The equipment is scheduled to be deployed by May.

China Telecom is aiming for a July listing of some of its assets in an initial public offering, which is expected to raise US$8 billion to US$10 billion.
