21cn.com Opens Personal Mailbox, At a Price

21cn.com, a popular portal in China, launched its first paid e-mail service on January 8, according to a statement on its website.

The "personal commercial mailbox" service offers free subscriptions for the first month. Starting from February 8, subscribers will be charged 20 yuan (US$2.4) per month, or 120 yuan for seven months.

The statement said the mailbox has a capacity of 21Mb. It is also capable of sending 6Mb of attachments. In addition, subscribers can send messages to mobile phones and pagers.

Through a "sniffer", or a filter software, the paid mailbox will also be able to purge junk mail.

21cn.com also provides free e-mail services and paid mailbox for enterprises.
