Chinese Vice President Meets Syrian CounterpartVisiting Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao held friendly talks in Damascus on Thursday with his Syrian counterpart Mohammed Zouhair Musharaqah.At the meeting, Hu conveyed greetings from Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Li Ruihuan to Musharaqah, who is also vice chairman of Syria's Progressive National Front (PNT), a united front formed in 1972 with the ruling Arab Baath Socialist Party as its core. CPPCC has established good relations with PNT, which is conducive to the development of mutually-beneficial and friendly cooperation between the two countries, said Hu. Both China and Syria are developing countries faced with similar tasks of development and challenges of the times, said hu, adding the two countries bear the responsibility of safeguarding regional stability and peace. China attaches great importance to increasing cooperation with Syria in all fields, Hu added. He hoped both sides will join efforts to strengthen their mutually-beneficial trade and economic relations, enhance coordination in international affairs, and build up a long-standing, stable and sincere relationship in the new century. The Syrian vice president said Syria and China should promote exchange and cooperation in all fields to enhance the steady development of each country in political, economic, social and cultural sectors. Syria's Progressive National Front should promote cooperation with CPPCC in all sectors to further boost the friendly ties between the two countries, he noted. The Syrian official also spoke highly of China's fair and just positions in international affairs, expressing his gratitude for the Chinese government's support to the cause of Arab people in safeguarding sovereignty and national dignity. Meanwhile, he stressed that Syria will unswervingly stick to the One China policy and support China's reunification.
