China to Set up Medical Center for Breast Cancer

Construction on the China Prevention Center for Breast Cancer is underway in north China's city of Tianjin.

The center, the first of its kind in China and the largest so far in Asia, will mainly focus on basic research and clinical treatment of breast cancer.

With a floor space of 23,000 sq m, the 300-bed center is made up of four components: a research department, areas for application of biological technology and clinical treatment, and a technical supporting section.

The incidence of breast cancer in China's 10 major cities, including Shanghai, Beijing, and Tianjin has kept going up in the past decade.

Statistics show that some 1.2 million women around the world suffer from breast cancer and 500,000 of them die from it every year.

Experts note that physical factors, biological conditions, the environment, and intake of protein may all attribute to the increase in cancer rates.
