Shandong Saved Handsomely Through Government Procurement

A government procurement scheme has helped east China's Shandong Province save some US$108 million in recent years.

The news came at a provincial government procurement work conference held here Wednesday.

Statistics showed that the Shandong provincial government procurement had totaled some 569 million US dollars during the past several years.

The provincial government procurement has rapidly developed from the early material purchase to engineering projects and the service sectors.

Procurement relating to engineering projects and service industries reached some 313 million US dollars in 2000 alone, accounting for 34.6 and 11.53 percent of the provincial yearly total, respectively.

Such internationally accepted procurement methods as open tender and invitation tender have been adopted in Shandong's public purchasing activities.

Now, relevant departments are striving to share the procurement information across the province by the end of this June.

Government procurement refers to the lawful procurement activities conducted by governments at all levels to serve the needs of public administration by using specially allocated public funds.

It is termed as "project under the sunshine" due to the fact that all related activities are subject to public supervision and regulation.
