Outbreak of Cholera Worsens in Southern AfricaAn outbreak of cholera is worsening in southern Africa. More than 140 people have now died from the disease, as relevant reports say:Health officials are trying contain the cholera epidemic. But, the disease is spreading rapidly, it has already claimed 63 lives in South Africa and 50 in Mozambique. Deaths have also been recorded in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Swaziland. Heavy rains have triggered the latest outbreak. Residents in poverty stricken areas have contracted the disease, after drinking contaminated water from swollen rivers and streams. Education campaigns are now being conducted, to warn people of the dangers of cholera. The World Health Organisation has praised local health workers for their efforts. |
