Swedish KFOR Soldiers to Receive Physical Tests

Sweden will provide physical examinations to its peacekeeping troops in Kosovo to determine whether they have been affected by radiation from depleted uranium munitions used in NATO Bombings in the Balkans.

Urine samples chosen from 100 soldiers at random will be tested to determine whether they contain elements of depleted uranium or other heavy metals, according to a written statement released by Swedish Military authorities on Wednesday.

Sweden will also distribute written materials about depleted uranium to all its soldiers in the Balkans, and will examine and provide consultation for those who do not feel well or experience unease.

Since 1993, Sweden has sent more than 10,000 peacekeeping troops to the Balkans, including a battalion stationed in Kosovo, but nothing extraordinary regarding radiation contamination has been detected yet, the statement said.
