US Northern Calif. Shootings

At least one person was killed and four wounded in related shootings Jan.10 at a county building and restaurant in Nevada County in sheriff's officials say.

A man went into the county social services building in Nevada City, a small former Gold Rush town northwest of Sacramento, shortly before noon and shot three people, investigators said.

He then went to a Lyon's restaurant between Nevada City and Grass Valley and shot two people, killing one of them, sheriff's officials said.

The suspect was still at large the afternoon.

County buildings and area schools and businesses were in lockdown as officers searched for the man.

A woman shot at the restaurant was brought by helicopter to the Sutter Roseville Trauma Center. A man wounded at the restaurant was in surgery at the Sierra Nevada Hospital in Grass Valley, hospital spokesman Gary Cooke said.

Two county employees were also being treated at the hospital: one who hurt a foot while fleeing the county health building, and one receiving treatment for emotional trauma, Cooke said.
