Chengguan Cited for "Two Basic Demands" Met in Lhasa

Chengguan is an urban district lately cited in Lhasa for its commendable work in first meeting "two basic demands" for developing education among some 70 counties in Tibet Autonomous Region. The "two basic demands" refer to spread of 9-year compulsory education and wiping out adult illiteracy among a population of 140,000 residing in urban Chengguan. Global Submarine Optical Cable Landed in Hong Kong

January 10 saw a submarine optical cable, which links China's Hong Kong and the world, landing at Kowloon Tesung Kwan O of Hong Kong. This optical fiber cable, dubbed Asia Global Crossing, over 40,000-km long, is a part of the global telecommunication network. It links Hong Kong with over 200 main business cities of 27 countries and regions and provides advanced wide frequency communication services, thereby making telecommunication contacts between the Asia-Pacific region and other parts of the world quicker and smoother. Beijing's Three Museums Keep "Oriental Beauty" of Tang Dynasty

The Chinese Cultural Relics Exchange Center and the Sichuan Provincial Museum held a ceremony on January 9 to give three archaize arts-"Oriental Beauty" -- to the History Museum of China and China Millennium Monument. With a padmasana and an ebony altar, bronze statue weighting 20 kg imitates the carved stone of Goddess of Mercy of the Tang Dynasty unearthed in Chengdu, the capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province. Brown crystal pearls are inlaid on the head of the statue and twenty-one purple crystal pearls on the padmasana.

Swan Lake on Edge of the Yellow River

Flocks of swans gather in the wetlands of Taili Bay in Heyang county, Shaanxi Province. The county has turned the wilderness area into a swan habitat through an environmental protection program. Over 70 kinds of birds including State's first-class and second-class protection ones, are attracted to pass the winter here every year.

Chinese Pandas Make Debut at Washington National Zoo in US
