Shenzhen to Lavish Major Investment for River Harnessing

Shenzhen of south China's Guangdong Province will spend 7.3 billion yuan (about US$879 million) in harnessing 28 local rivers from 2001 to 2005.

The city government of Shenzhen has submitted the plan for discussion and approval to Shenzhen People's Congress, the local legislature.

For this year alone, the city, which also faces Hong Kong across a local river, will earmark 1.1 billion yuan (about US$133 million) for harnessing Guanlan, Buji, Longgang, Pingshan, Futian, Xinzhou rivers, said a local official.

The official explained that they hope through five years' efforts, the quality of the environment for water in local rivers will be improved enormously, and all the sources of drinking water in the city will meet the required standards.

The financing will be met by way of government investment, public fund-raising, loans, overseas investment and raising fees for sewage treatment, according to the official.
