Taiwan's Trade Surplus to Hong Kong Approached US$30 BillionLatest statistics from Taiwan showed that the Island province's trade surplus to Hong Kong in 2000 reached US$29.17bn, a rise of US$5.25bn over that of 1999, setting a new record high. This is benefited from the increase of cross-Strait trade, according to sources in Taiwan economic circle. In 2000, Taiwan's export value to Hong Kong topped US$31.3bn, next only to US$34.8bn, its export to the US, accounting for 21 percent of Taiwan's total export value. In the meantime, Taiwan's import value from Hong Kong was only US$2.1bn. Obviously, most of Taiwan's export to Hong Kong was actually a transit trade to China's mainland. Therefore, it can be said that Taiwan achieved a total trade surplus of US$29.1bn to China's mainland in 2000, a booming of over 20 percent as against that of 1999.
