Jiang Zemin Stresses Publicity, Ideological Work

Jiang Zemin Stresses Publicity, Ideological Work
Jiang Zemin, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, urged publicity departments nationwide to highlight China's drive to accelerate its development in the new century on Wednesday, January 10.

Development holds the key to resolving the difficulties China faces and to ensuring Chinese people's faith and confidence in the future of socialism and the motherland, Jiang said, adding that prominence should be given to the campaign of seizing the opportunities and speeding up the country's development.

Jiang made the remarks at a national conference attended by heads of publicity departments of provincial CPC committees.

Present at the meeting were Li Lanqing, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, and other senior Party officials including Ding Guan'gen, who presided over the meeting, Li Tieying, Zhang Wannian, Luo Gan, Qian Qichen, and Zeng Qinghong.

In his address, Jiang praised the achievements made by CPC's publicity departments at various levels, adding that ideological publicity is the work of the whole Party and it is linked to the general situation of the reform, development and stability as well as the building of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

Jiang expressed his hope that the Party's publicity workers would take the new century as a new starting point to promote the publicity work to a higher level.

He urged the whole Party and the whole nation to double the efforts for China's economic and social development, in order to constantly increase the country's economic power, the capability of its national defense, and the cohesive strength of the nation.

He pledged to continue advocating the guiding status of Marxism and to constantly arm the whole Party and educate the Chinese people with Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought and Deng Xiaoping Theory, which are the fundamental ideological base for the Party to closely unite and lead the people to strive together.

The news media is the mouthpiece of the Party and the people and should publicize the spirits of the Party Central Committee in a precise, clear and vivid manner and reflect the will of the people truthfully and completely, Jiang stressed.

He urged them to publicize scientific theories, spread advanced culture, and advocate justice and scientific spirit, so as to improve the entire Chinese people's quality on ideology, ethics, science and culture.

To commemorate the 80th founding anniversary of the CPC by further carrying out the campaign to study the "Three Representatives" theory is a major issue for the Party in the first year of the new century, Jiang said.

He urged them to study well, publicize and implement the theory in order to help constantly enhance the level of leadership and governance of the CPC, to increase the Party's capabilities to stave off corruption, prevent crisis, and resist risks.

A nation without a strong will has no future, Jiang said. He urged to advocate the spirit of ideological emancipation, seeking truth from facts, and being bold, creative, hard working, practical and selfless.
