Chirac Asks for Transparency on Balkan Syndrome Issue
French President Jacques Chirac said Wednesday that NATO's investigations into the Balkan Syndrome, which could have been caused by radiation from depleted uranium used during the Yugoslavia campaign, should be made transparent.
Eighteen military personnel of several European countries who had participated in the peacekeeping missions in Bosnia and Kosovo have died recently of cancer or leukemia.
French presidential spokeswoman Catherine Colonna said Chirac also expressed concern over the health of French soldiers serving in former Yugoslavia.
First Secretary of the French Socialist Party Francois Hollande said on the same day that NATO should tell the truth about the depleted uranium it used in the Balkans.
The European Union has urged NATO to provide more information on depleted uranium, which was used by U.S. troops to shoot tanks in Bosnia and Kosovo.
