Taiwan Compatriots Gathering to Greet Spring Festival in HKThe Central People's Government Liaison Office in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) held a get-together for Taiwan compatriots in Hong Kong Wednesday to greet the forthcoming Chinese Spring Festival.Jiang Enzhu, director of the Central People's Government Liaison Office in the Hong Kong SAR, expressed his wish for a happy New Year to the 300 participants from all walks of life in Hong Kong and Taiwan present at the event. Delivering a speech, Zou Zhekai, vice-director of the Central People's Government Liaison Office, said the year 2000 is a noted year in China's reform, opening-up and modernization drive. The national economy continued its speedy growth, the western region development got a sound start, and the science and education witnessed significant progress, he added. Zou also praised Hong Kong for its social stability, economic recovery and increased exchanges with the mainland under the "one country, two systems" principle in the past three years. "Hong Kong continued to maintain a sound ties with Taiwan, with further expansion of their exchanges of personnel, economy and culture each other," he said, adding that Hong Kong remains the principal transfer place for Taiwan's external transportation and Taiwan compatriots to go to the mainland. As the first example of the "one country, two systems" principle, Hong Kong will have a positive effect on Taiwan compatriots, he said. Facts fully demonstrate that the "one country, two systems" is successful in Hong Kong and is of strong vitality and fine prospects, he pointed out. "We believe it is also the best way to solve the Taiwan question and fulfill the ultimate reunification of the country," he said. Zou also reviewed the efforts made in the past year in carrying out the "peaceful reunification, and one country, two systems" and President Jiang Zemin's Eight-Point proposal, and the intense combats against those separatist forces in Taiwan. "We advocate that there is only one China in the world, that the mainland and Taiwan belong to one China, and that China's sovereignty and territory integrity is inseparable," he said. He urged to the Taiwan authorities to comply with the people's will, accept the "one China" principle and do something practical to improve the cross-strait relations and realize the reunification of the country.
