Shaanxi Province Has 300,000 Internet Users

The number of Internet users in northwest China's Shaanxi Province had exceeded 300,000 by the end of December, 2000, nearly seven times as many as in 1999.

Shaanxi, which is among the relatively developed provinces in the IT industry in the nation, had fewer than 400 Internet users in 1996 when the province began to introduce Internet. In 1998, the number of Internet users reached 23,000. The number surged to 52,000 in 1999.

Now Internet users make up 0.8 percent of Shaanxi's population.

By the end of 1999, the province had had launched on the Internet more than 800 web sites with over 80 data bases.

The IT industry contributes 20 percent to the province's GDP growth, according to the Provincial Department of the Information Industry.
