Shanghai Port Trade Boomed in 2000

Shanghai port trade had reached a record high of US$109.3 billion in 2000, up 43.5 percent over 1999,according to Shanghai Customs.

Lu Peijun, director of Municipality Customs, said Shanghai had taken a quarter of last year's national foreign trade volume.

Statistics show that Shanghai port import amounted to some US$47. 739 billion, up 49.8 percent over 1999. Export increased by 39 percent to reach US$61.572 billion in 2000.

Lu said that with the development of Pudong District and the positioning of Shanghai as an international transportation hub, the functions of the international metropolis as an important port and great market will become more prominent.

Shanghai Customs has established connections with 72 regional customs across the country. Enterprises may undergo customs procedures with local associated customs in order to conduct foreign trade through Shanghai port.

Shanghai port trade has witnessed an average increase of 25 percent in recent years.
