Li Peng Arrives in India for Goodwill Visit
China's top legislator Li Peng flew in Mumbai, the largest city of India on Tuesday, January 9, for a week-long official goodwill visit, at the invitation of Chairman Krishan Kant of India's Upper House of Parliament and Speaker G.M.C. Balayogi of the House of the People.

It is Li's first visit to India as the chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature. It is also an exchange of another high-level visit between China and India following President Jiang Zemin's state visit to India in 1996 and Indian President Kocheril Raman Narayanan's visit to China in May 2000.

During his current visit, Li will exchange views with Indian leaders on a wide range of issues of mutual concern, and meet friends from all walks of life to discuss ways of expanding cooperation between the two countries.

Mumbai is the first leg of Li's four-city India tour, which will also carry him to New Delhi, Agra and Bangalore.
