Yunnan Cracks Down on Drug Trafficking

Increased efforts were made to reduce drug trafficking in Southwest China's Yunnan Province in the past year.

Reliable sources said that during the period between January and November, 2000, the province cracks down on 7,630 drug cases, confiscating 765.6 kilograms of opium and 541.4 kilograms of "ice", an increase of 49.6 percent and 42 percent, respectively, over the same period in 1999.

According to the sources, A total of 2,881.5 kilograms of heroin was confiscated in the 11-month period and more than 4,300 suspected drug dealers were arrested, and another 35,000 plus drug addicts were sent to drug-relief centers.

Yunnan, neighboring the "golden triangle", has been used as a major passage for drug trafficking by drug dealers.

At present, the province has 17 counties implementing a "drug-free" project, and 209 drug-free communities have been established.
