Chinese Police Prepare for Spring Festival TrafficTraffic police across the country are taking various measures to ensure road safety in the upcoming Spring Festival rush when nearly 100 million Chinese will be traveling, an officer from the Ministry of Public Security said Tuesday.The traditional festival, which falls on January 24 this year, is the most important occasion to spend with family in China. The officer warned that in previous years, there were sharp increases in major traffic accidents in China over the period. In 2000, there were 58 major traffic accidents that caused over 910 deaths, 3.6 percent more than that in 1999. Local traffic police in Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Shandong and Henan have issued new regulations to increase penalties on violations against traffic rules. More manpower will also be added to patrol expressways to ensure a smooth traffic flow and quick responses to accidents occurring in stormy weathers. |
