Belarus to Normalize Ties with US

Belarus wants to normalize relations with the United States and sees good prospects for a successful economic and political partnership between the two countries, Belarussian Foreign Minister Mikhail Khvostov said Monday.

"I hope that the new US administration will lay the foundation for dialogue between the Belarussian Foreign Ministry and the US Department of State," he said in an interview with Itar-Tass in Minsk, capital of Belarus.

The minister said Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko had stated his country's intention to normalize relations with the US in his letter to the US president-elect.

He noted that there should be no preconditions for the commencement of the dialogue between the two countries.

"Belarus is ready to begin negotiations in order to state its vision for the problems that exist in bilateral relations," Khvostov said.

He stressed the need to "look for elements that will bring us together, not set us apart."
