Singapore to Resume Free Trade Negotiations with US Soon

Singapore and the United States will begin a second round of negotiations on the US- Singapore Free Trade Agreement (USSFTA) in Washington from January 10 to 17, Singapore ministries of Foreign Affairs and Trade & Industry announced in a joint press statement Monday.

The statement also said that the second round of talks in Washington will focus on market access for goods, safeguards, trade in services, intellectual property, dispute settlement and institutional arrangements relating to the USSFTA.

The statement also affirmed that a key objective of the second round of negotiations is to achieve good progress so that the third round of negotiations can resume early in Singapore.

As part of the preparations for the negotiations, a US team of experts in the areas of competition policy, customs and textiles, labor and environment will be visiting Singapore this week, according to the statement.

Singapore and the US held their first round of negotiations on USSFTA in Washington from December 4 to 21 last year but failed to attain the previous target of reaching agreement before the end of last year.
