Britain Wants to Strengthen Relations with India

The Tony Blair government in Britain is committed to further improving ties with India and the current initiatives should take the annual bilateral trade between the two countries to over US$5 billion, visiting British Trade and Industry Secretary Stephen Byers said here on Monday.

"One of the major objectives of the Blair government is to strengthen relations with India, given the historical ties between the two countries," Byers, who is heading a large British business delegation, was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India (PTI).

Byers met with Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Murasoli Maran here on Monday, during which Maran informed the visitor of various policies Indian government has adopted in the economic reform process, the PTI noted.

On the issue of multilateral trade, Byers told Maran that the implementation concerns of developing countries including India needed to be addressed before the next ministerial meeting so as to infuse confidence in the multilateral trading system
