Taiwan's Forex Reserves Hit 12-Month Low

Taiwan's foreign exchange reserves hit a 12-month low at the end of December 2000 to reach US$106.71 billion, according to figures released Monday by Taiwanese mass media.

Foreign exchange reserves at the end of December were 1.49 billion U.S. dollars less than that of the previous month, and indicated the sixth month-on-month decline in a row, statistics showed.

Taiwan's foreign exchange reserves are the world's fourth largest, next to Japan, China's mainland and Hong Kong. Analysts attributed the shrinkage mainly to weakness in the New Taiwan dollar.
