NPC Chairman Meets Uruguayan Guest
Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), met Monday with President Washington Abdala of the Chamber of Deputies of Uruguay.

Li extended a warm welcome to Abdala, who arrived in Beijing Sunday for a friendly visit as Li's guest, and highly praised the smooth progress of bilateral ties.

China is willing to work with Uruguay to further reinforce friendly cooperation between the two parliaments and the two countries, said Li.

He believed that Uruguay is influential in Latin-America, which is broad in landscape, rich in natural resources, and has large a development potential. China attaches great importance to relations with Latin-American countries and is willing to promote common development through joint efforts.

He also expressed appreciation for Latin American Countries' pursuit of one-China policy.

Li said that multipolarization and economic globalization are two major trends in the world. China upholds that the world should move towards multipolarity and that the interests of developing countries be guaranteed.

China will strive to adapt to economic globalization and has made great efforts toward its entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Abdala said China has great influence in world affairs and Uruguay stresses the importance of building a long-term and stable friendship with China.

He reaffirmed that Uruguay firmly sticks to the one-China policy. He also said that Uruguay supports China's efforts to enter the WTO and wishes for an early entry.

Abdala invited Li to visit Uruguay at a convenient time and Li accepted his invitation.
