Shooting Heard on Streets in Abidjan

Explosions and gun fire were heard on the streets of Cote d'ivoire's commercial capital of Abidjan late Sunday, but it was not clear who was involved and what was the motivation.

The gun fire was heard at the state radio and television stations, and people living nearby could even feel the tremble caused by the explosion, witnesses said.

Interior Minister Emile Bopga Doudou was quoted early Monday morning by AFP as saying that an "attempted coup d'etat" was underway, amid heavy fighting.

Political turmoil and ethnic Chaos wracked the West African country for more than one year before the presidential elections in last October.
