US Prepared to Lift Sanctions on YugoslaviaThe United States is prepared to lift economic sanctions on Yugoslavia this week according to a report in Sunday's Washington Post. The Clinton administration expects to complete work this week on an executive order that would lift economic sanctions on Yugoslavia that have barred US trading with the Balkan federation since 1999, the report said. The lifting of sanctions by presidential executive order would allow Yugoslavia to begin to rebuild its economy, which was first strangled by sanctions and then shattered by thousands of NATO bombing raids. It would mark another symbolic step in the restoration of relations that has taken place since Vojislav Kostunica defeated Slobodan Milosevic in presidential elections, the report said. Yugoslavia's foreign minister, Goran Svilanovic, who met with US Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright Thursday, said that his country needs US support if it is to "cope with the difficulties we are facing" and reintegrate with Europe. |
