Mortar Shells Rock Tehran, No Casualties Reported

Five mortar shells hit northern Tehran, capital of Iran, on Sunday evening, but caused no casualties or damage, the Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

The shells hit residential areas around the rich Vanak square area, which is also home to the headquarters of the state security forces, the report said.

Mujahedeen Khalq Organization (MKO), an Iraq-based outlawed Iranian opposition group, has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The organization said it had mounted a mortar attack on the general command of the Iranian state security forces and the headquarters of the commander, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf.

The MKO has been in armed confrontation with Iran since 1980 when it was outlawed by the Iranian government.
