Jordan, Saudi Arabia Reassure Support for PalestiniansJordanian King Abdullah Bin Hussein and visiting Saudi Arabian Defense Minister Sultan Bin Abdul-Aziz on Sunday reaffirmed their countries' support for the rights of the Palestinians, particularly the setup of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.During the meeting, Abdullah and Sultan, one of the highest Saudi officials to visit Jordan in a decade, discussed the latest developments in the Palestinian lands as well as ways of bolstering bilateral cooperation, Jordan's official news agency Petra reported without further elaborating. Abdullah expressed his appreciation for Riyhad's persistent support for Jordan and other Arab countries and said Sultan's visit to Amman will further bolster bilateral cooperation between the two countries, Petra said. For his part, Sultan, who is also Saudi deputy prime minister, said the two countries should further promote their cooperation in the fields of trade, investment and defense.กก Relations between the two neighbors suffered a setback during the 1990 Gulf crisis as Jordan sided with Iraq on its invasion of Kuwait. Saudi Arabia cut off oil supply to Jordan in September that year. Their icy relations began to thaw after Abdullah assumed the throne following the death of his father King Hussein Ibn Talal in February 1999. |
